South Wairarapa

Raising A Region

From 1 October 2025, Kia Hākinakina Wairarapa works with and on behalf of South Wairarapa District Council to offer a wide range of support and opportunities to all sections of the South Wairarapa community: Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough and rural areas.

Under the banner Raising A Region, we use our leading approaches to broaden the scale, involvement and enjoyment of Sport, Play, Physical Activity and Recreation for anyone and everyone.

Underneath, and interwoven within all of this, is our focus on Values, Inclusion and Whanaungatanga, self-exploration, discovery and achievement.

What we offer

Five ways we support South Wairarapa

Club Support

With an initial emphasis on readiness under the Incorporated Societies Act by April 2026, we provide a range of resources, advice and connections to support clubs (as needed) in the South Wairarapa. With close relationships with Nuku Ora, a range of Wairarapa-based Regional Sports Organisations and links to national entities, we facilitate understanding of best practice in a range of areas, including a number of useful resources.

Primary School Support

We're keen to offer our Primary School teacher support model to any and all schools in the South Wairarapa, designed to positively impact curriculum settings through play, game play and fundamental and functional movement. This can include teacher support mechanisms, alignment to PE planning, and integration of curriculum aligned leadership approaches.

Public Events

We're establishing new participation opportunities across the breadth of South Wairarapa. Keep an eye on this space to see what's happening in the calendar.

Coach / Volunteer Support

We fully support the Nuku Ora drive for a regional Coach Developer approach across the Wairarapa. In the South Wairarapa we're giving clubs tasters of this potential strategy, based on the modern Game Based approach to learning and activity, alongside understanding how social competence and connectedness can be part of a coach, volunteer and organisation approach.

Rangatahi

We have a drive to fully align to both Te Rautaki Rangatahi o Wairarapa and at least one other soon-to-be-released regional rangatahi sport / physical activity strategy, developing programmes to support rangatahi with their voice at the centre. This includes a new approach, I Can Be Me, and established offerings such as Pathway to Performance.
