Our Board
Kia Hākinakina Wairarapa has a Board of four Trustees, ensuring the organisation is run efficiently and effectively, aligned to both its Trust Deed and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Below are the profiles for each Trustee, detailing their experience and their commitment to community enhancement.
Barry Hislop
ChairpersonAs a professional in the sport, fitness and recreation industry, the journey has been a lifelong one of discovery and expansive learning. The privilege on that pathway has been explorational, with experiences and placements. That work extended to both regional and national professional roles throughout NZ, with international exposure and duties.
These many roles include developing and managing community facilities, creating programmes, providing education in leadership in coaching, supporting, counselling and mentoring within the industry, participating in and developing community events, and supporting professional services on behalf of and with communities and their people.
Mark Walker
TrusteeWith a strong background in education comes a passion for the learning, development, and empowerment of ākonga of all ages. My philosophy is grounded in relationships, inclusive practice, belonging, holistic well-being, and future-focused thinking to build a collaborative and thriving ‘Wairarapa Proud’ community.
As a Kaiako at Pūrātā/York Street Kindergarten (Whānau Manaaki Kindergarten Association), I’ve led planning and implementation within our localised curriculum focused on inclusion and collaboration. Key initiatives include a tuakana-teina partnership with Masterton Intermediate School, where tamariki explore and engage in new reciprocal learning opportunities and are empowered to lead through development of physical skills, literacies, culture, and more.
I also facilitate the calm classroom programme in our space. Brought to NZ after the Christchurch earthquakes, it embeds trauma-informed practice and supports diverse learning needs. I also promote the importance of tamariki learning fundamental skills (physical, and other) in the early years through play, and in their own space and time.
Kerewai Tatana
TrusteeSimon Roseingrave
TrusteeA passion for the Wairarapa region and its communities. Proven and recognised for the use of modern thinking and insights to develop physical activity, play and sport projects and philosophies with wide-reaching engagement and impact, at local, regional and national levels.
This includes a significant focus on enhancing and motivating communities by ensuring strategies and imperatives are fit for purpose, and brought to life to meet the needs of all. Alongside physical activity and skill development, the well-being of the individual, their connectedness to others and the desire to belong are personal priorities. This has been displayed through insights and implementation of social responsibility and competence models, to create true physical literacy opportunities and education.
